True story, apparently: As a gesture of friendship, a European king sent a portrait artist to the Emperor of China to paint portraits of the Chinese court, and its horses. Looking through his sample paintings, the Emperor said, "These are very nice, but why do they all have mud smeared on one side of their faces?"
