Under the Weather

sketchpair

Been under the weather this week. So all I have that I dare show you is the above. The girl on right was copied from an artist I like called Jesse Hamm. [link1] [link2]

Below, I suppose you should file under 'disturbing,' but all it started out as was a bad drawing of a woman leaning back unnaturally, so I put in this googly-eyed dog leaning in at her. Don't worry, it just licked her face.

Tough Guy and Friends

toughguyfaces

The tough guy of a few posts down has been joined by a bunch of other faces. I enjoy filling up the paper, but if it's something that has to be stretched and matted, it's good having a lot of white space all around.

Rapacious Squirrels

squirrel

Women were feeding squirrels in NDG Park. Big nuts, too. At least that kept them away from my sandwich. Back at my apartment, evil, scum-sucking squirrels (probably cousins to this one) have devastated my tomatoes on the rear balcony. Too bad the feeders didn't make it out this far east.

Today is Caturday, and Yesterday was Gagnon Friday

caturday

So in honour, I've got scribbles of cats executed at the Cock and Bull Pub (the drawing, not the cats), and below, a mellow work entitled "The Butcher," embellished by Mr. Gagnon.

Peter Brawley Memorial

I don't know how this blog becomes a news thing, what with only about a max of 100 readers a day, looking at, deriding, or being shocked by my drawings. Still, there will be a memorial to Peter Brawley, whom I eulogized here a while ago, at the end of the month, corner of Coloniale and Roy streets. Info at the [link].

1950 Ford from Memory

50ford2

I was asked to be part of an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Alberta, in Fort Saskatchewan, where 100 artists drew a 1950 Ford from memory. Screwed up, and didn't have my picture in on time. But they might be putting up a computer print. Anyhow, here it is.

Note: I had no idea what a 1950 Ford looked like, aside from a general impression of blobbyness. But that was part of the concept of the show.

Oh yeah. This is post number 500, I think.

More faces, etc.

hallyday

This is supposed to be Johnny Hallyday from the splendid French film L'Homme du Train.

Below, more drawings of women. The drawing below was snapped with my camera rather than put into the scanner, because the scanner gets rid of some of the more delicate tones in some pictures. So, I tried photographing it. In this attempt, I haven't bothered to get rid of the slightly blue, rough tone of the surrounding paper.

At least I don't have that drawing below staring at me any more, when I click on the site. Still, should get back to cooler, or at least funny, stuff.

Goat Guy

Thinking of these strange realistic human-animal hybrid sculptures some artist did. plus the churches I've been in, going to weddings the last couple of weeks. Strange stuff. Hope it doesn't give someone nightmares. Least of all, me!

Mia and Moths.

rosemary

Here's an attempt at Mia Farrow in the earlier section of "Rosemary's Baby." Gotta remember that this isn't a portfolio site. It's just me mucking around. Of course, I don't post the really awful things, but I'm tempted to, because a blog is about process.

Haven't been able to get a still photo to come up in that cat video below. Hope people weren't watching it expecting something thrilling to happen. Yes, he does lick his junk, and he almost gets his head caught under the railing, but it's not "America's Funniest Home Videos" material. Still, I'm tempted to get one of those HD cameras, and make some silly videos, but my life it so boring they'd mainly be of my feet, and those darned cats.

Had a moth the size of an owl flitting around the bedroom last night. Not there this morning. Hope the cats didn't try to eat it, because swallowing a moth made my kitten sick for a few days, way back when. Still, it's quite amazing these creatures (the cats) can usually catch moths, without benefit of wings of their own.

mothphoto

Taking a flash photo in a darkened room really spoils the markings, even if I wanted to take the effort to look it up, but this is a good 2.5 to 3 inches in wingspan. Big enough to be flappy.

Boggedy Cats

Sept 10 07 cats 001

Okay, I'm blogging the cats. Not trying to be startlingly original here. Just trying to loosen up, and do new things. The video below is one of them.

Captured with my Minolta camera, which is a really nice little device, and helps a lot in my artwork. It also does movies. Nothing exciting to watch, except it's what Mr. Boggedy does most sunny mornings, when he's not sleeping or getting a belly rub.

I like his "what 'cha lookin' at, fool?" glances at me with the camera, and the way the background noise changes as the kids get let into school. I'm pretty amazed that the video has just gone up, and already it's garnered a comment. If I'm really lucky, I'll get flamed. "What's your stupid cat doing, licking his junk?"

Above is Ms. Boggedy, ever the lady. She greets the sun with her morning orisions.

Wine Accident

mesa

Managed to dump wine on my pad of Fabriano watercolour paper last night. So, on this sheet, the wine becomes the sky. Lots of other wine-edged sheets, but no major diaster. Below, a cute penguin drawn while I was watching the movie Happy Feet. Not such a happy experience for me, but I liked that they didn't put crazy cartoon or human eyeballs on the animals. The film was sort of a version of Moulin Rouge with penguins, but with a disquieting edge of sadism, dealing with the penguin who has his head stuck in a plastic beer can web.

Sketch-bookery

sketchsept2

The scary skull-guy looks like he's from Time Bandits. That's me, with kind of my current hair, I sketched from my reflection in the TV.

Below, that lady looks like she has tortellinis in her hair. I should research my costumes and period interiors better. Get more ideas that way. That's Ms. B, my girl cat, who likes to lie in the sunlight.

Comic Jam

hippyguitar

Hanging out with the "Montreal Comic Jam" crowd on Thursday night, at Café Utopik. It's not much of a jam right now, more of a social club, because only the same six people show up, and nobody draws together anymore. But these things go in cycles. I hope more, or new people show up again, or even some of the old, once regular faces. Still, I drew this character, who wasn't really playing that night, but was standing outside. Country and Western people were playing inside, and very loudly.

Here's a snapshot of the gang: August 27 Montreal Comic Jam Group
(You can see who's who by clicking on the pic, I hope)

Below, more faintly hysterical watercolour faces.
