Dirty Damned Robots

sackhoff

To celebrate my not quite losing the blog to a damned URL-stealing robot, here's a more or less successful interpretation of Katee Sackhoff from "Battlestar Galactica." Coincidentally, her character fights a lot of robots on the TV show.

Or, just another creepy drawing. Take your pick.

Ask an Expert

tarzan2

This issue's "Ask an Expert" in the McGill Reporter was a question about whether writers are allowed to use famous characters who have slipped into the public domain.

Actually, the first version I submitted is below, but they thought the knife was too menacing. I'd never noticed it, because Tarzan's always got a knife ("Kareegah Numa!"). Or, maybe I've been in a bad mood this week. But certainly never intended any intimations of cartoon carnage, especially after all the problems they've had in schools lately.

tarzan

It's actually a nice gig, because they pretty much trust me to provide something that's funny and cute, and there's usually not a lot of back and forth with preliminary drawings, and approval. Still, this was a different editor this issue, though I dont' think it made much difference.

It was easy enough to fix with photoshop, though I wish I had given Tarzan a bit more space, as I did in the earlier version. Still, you're not supposed to talk about that sort of thing. It's all perfect.

All the same, perfect's boring.

MensuHell Nights

October26 005

By the time I had gotten to the Monthly Montreal Comic Jam, a lot of people had gone home, and the Sala Rossa was filled with "Raging Grannies," attending a concert upstairs.

Still, I got a nifty photograph of the "MensuHell" crew (that's the local monthly comic zine) (L to R):

Francis Hervieux, Kurt Beaulieu, Sirkowski, Jane Tremblay, Eric Thériault, and Richard Gagnon.

Of course they do other things, (explore the links), but Francis is the main instigator of the mag.

Get Well

getwell

Gosh, it's been a tough week or so, though not working at the moment. Above is a get well card for a family member. Below is a craggy space guy, and bottom is something from my archives I thought was funny, and might lighten up my mood a bit.

Peter Brawley

brawley-oid

Found out by reading an old Gazette column in the laundromat, that Peter Brawley died earlier this month. He was an old Main guy, growly but artsy. Haven't seen him for years. This picture doesn't look like him. It's just an impression. He was in a 1970's independent film called Montreal Main, which still really does give a feeling of boho Montreal.

Here's playwright David Fennario's take on Peter: [link] [now sadly down]

Art School Confidential

clowes

Daniel Clowes, cartoonist, and co-producer of the movie "Art School Confidential" is riding a fairy-tale horse. Don't know how this would have flown in real art school, but I only ever took one course, and got a "C."

Gosh, I love the park

further-park

Took my colours to the park, today. The jogger was there again, running up the concrete steps at the end of the park, and skipping rope. But I drew a cute kid, and a doggie. Plus this singer, who was in my head, thanks to my I-pod. (yes, I've drunk the Koolaid) Actually, kind of a C & Westernised Bob Dylan.

Back in the Park

It's a nice day, and I've done my work. Can try to relax. Jogger on Saturday, plus the standard Fluffy Pussy Cat.

Van Helsing

helsing

Gotta remind both of you visitors, I'm not posting all masterpieces here. Just stuff I'm drawing at the time. Watching the bad movie "Van Helsing," which is made much more interesting with the DVD commentary, about how Kate Beckinsale's hair changes from shot to shot, etc.

I like it when filmmakers are a little critical of the film they're commenting on. However, it is a marketing tool, so they're not going to go full-on about how bad a certain actor was, or what a totally rotten experience making the movie was.

When I was an extra on "Timeline" I heard the director chewing out the actors, and saw a lot of the expensive stuff that was screwed up and had to be reshot (and the 2nd Unit Director fired), because, for instance, the smoke wasn't put into some scenes, and they didn't match with other scenes. Haven't actually rented that one, yet, for whatever reason, but I think my extra days are behind me. Unless they call again, and I'm doing nothing at the time. Of course, I'm supposed to be a genius writer, so I should be writing about all this, in places other than a blog.

Anyhow, this is Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing (without his trademark hat), and his nemesis (or alter ego), the evil (but pointy) werewolf.

Latest McGillustration

highnote

The question they're asking the expert this week in the McGill Reporter, is "Can a voice really shatter glass?" Here's the answer.

Missed YULBlog, the monthly meeting of Montreal bloggers at a bar, last night, because my bike got a flat, and it started raining, boo hoo.

"*Sputter* I'm a respected Professor of Logic! Why am I placed below a mere pussycat?"

What an old fart! Why can't he be more like swingin' freewheelin' Professor Gizmo?

Actually, before you think I've lost my mind (I know, that bus has long since pulled out), this drawing is an echo of the late Michael Jeter, who was a balding man with a big head (not this big) wearing a moustache and a ball gown in Terry Gilliam's pretty disappointing movie, The Fisher King.

Gilliam is one of my heroes, in lots of ways (Time Bandits and Brazil are two of my favourite flicks), but can you say "totally undisicplined (though powerful) imagination"?

Scooter Cuties

Well, my Scooter Girl below is off to Seattle, to the show. So, I get so be in a show with Jim Woodring, along with another of my cartoonist heroes, David Lasky. I'm very happy.
