Peter Brawley

Found out by reading an old Gazette column in the laundromat, that Peter Brawley died earlier this month. He was an old Main guy, growly but artsy. Haven't seen him for years. This picture doesn't look like him. It's just an impression. He was in a 1970's independent film called Montreal Main, which still really does give a feeling of boho Montreal.
Here's playwright David Fennario's take on Peter: [link] [now sadly down]

Holy s--t! He died? He woesn't that old, Jack! Maybe in his fifties, or at most, in his sixties. Jeez! I feel disappointed with that news. He was such a nice guy! I saw him at quite a few readings, and the last time I saw him was at S.W. Welch around the corner from where I lived.
How did he die? As I said, he wasn't so old, so... He looked pretty healthy last year.
Don't know. Obviously he wasn't that healthy. I think he was in his early 60s, however. Learned about it from Bill Brownstein's column in the Gazoo (which might be online), but didn't notice a cause mentioned. Will check next time I'm in the library.
Peter was 59. I spent some time working with him in the summer, and can tell you that he was in a very good place in his life. his death was sudden and a shock to us all. such a loss.
Someone created a really interesting "shrine" to Peter Brawley, on Roy Street and (I think) De Bullion, across the street from Else's cafe.
I always liked running into Peter, whom I first saw in MONTREAL MAIN back in the 70s. I recently bumped into Stephen Lack who told me it's coming out soon on DVD.
Ya; Peter was 59 and not really in the greatest shape insofar as he always had a wee bit if a heart thing from the old days and some excessive skiing on a mirror somewhere way back. He was in a great space as far as the 'work' was concerned He was getting lots of great painting done and they had a quality that was so 'uncloying' and they existed only as the paintings and their subject, kinda humble and alluding respectfully to aspects of art history . I woke up this morning thinking about him and my wife dreamt about him and the concensus is that he is smoking Biddis in the east as we speak. That's what we'd like to think. And HAPPY
